HLTH 1020 Signature Assignment Nutrition Perspectives Fall 2018

HLTH 1020 Signature Assignment Fall 2018

Nutrition Perspectives

*Learning Outcomes*

1.     It is amazing how easy it can be to meet all of your dietary and nutritional needs every day if you put together a simple food plan. By learning how to use "My Plate", it lays out for each person what type of foods you need to be sure to include in your every day meal. Knowing that it is important to have one half of my meal time plate full of fruits and or vegetables, helps me know that I need to purchase an abundance of those when I go to the grocery store. I know that I need to have a serving of whole grains, and that my serving of some type of protein should be lean protein. And to top it all off, I need to be sure to have a serving of a dairy type product.
By breaking down needed nutrition to these food groups, I am then able to understand what each one offers to my daily requirements. I know that fruits and vegetables are plants, which contain important phytochemicals that help provide my body with antioxidants to fight sickness, and vitamins that help various functions in my body continue to work successfully; things like my immune system, my vision, and even cancer prevention. I know that whole grain products offer some more vitamins, but they also offer some minerals like iron that is a component of hemoglobin, and Manganese which helps with bone formation. Protein rich foods contain Zinc, which helps wounds heal, as well as Magnesium which helps the activation of Vitamin D and helps in reducing the chance for tooth decay. Dairy products contain Calcium which helps take part in blood clotting, muscle movements, nerves, and even creating bone.
By incorporating a rounded and balanced diet at each meal, I am ensuring that my bodily functions run smoothly and properly, which as an outcome makes me have more energy, helps my body fight off infection and sickness, as well as perform in my physical activities of choice to the best of my abilities. By choosing to eat in this way, I am choosing to purchase these nutritious food items and not purchasing things that are overly processed. Consumers cast a vote each time the purchase something, and those votes add up to what type of product will be more available at grocery type stores.

2.    With the advancements in science and medicine comes a great leap forward for the science of human nutrition. Lab tests are able to be done to learn of vitamin deficiencies; studies regarding prebiotics, probiotics, and synbiotics as benefits for gastrointestinal health and ultimately increased absorption of nutrients.

3.    The food industry has massive control over the average consumer in America. Utilizing things such as misleading packaging. Corporations will toy with the average human consumer: By using phrases such as "fat free" to mask the fact that there is more than the RDA of sugar in one serving. Or phrases that state an item is an excellent source of a specific vitamin and mineral, when in reality the requirement for being able to use that statement means that there is less than 10% of that vitamin or mineral in one serving. These phrases are coupled with packaging tactics that use colors that are associated with fresh nutritious foods like the color green, or even utilizing the color red as it appeals to the appetite. All of these tactics are used to confuse the average consumer who lacks the education or knowledge of how to properly read food labels.

4.    Some examples of past diet trends include the "Slim Fast" diet. This diet was quite popular in the mid to late 90's, and the concept is still in play with other diet brands in today's world. Slim Fast was a product of ready to drink or eat meal replacement shakes or snack bars. The idea was to replace two "meals a day with a "Slim Fast" product. The whole name of the company "Slim Fast" was misleading as it implied a quick route to losing weight, which is proof that it was a fad type of diet. The products contained some nutrients, but also a large amount of sugar to make the taste appealing and satisfying to have instead of a meal. Ultimately this type of fad diet was and will never be a sustainable tool for weight loss, as it wasn't a lifestyle change for the long term. Not to mention the environmental impact of throwing away wrappers and cans two times a day was negative.

5.    An example of negative impact on microorganisms in food production is one regarding sickness and eventually death. With outbreaks of Ecoli, and corporations and companies delayed recall response to this bacterial discovery, thousands of consumers each year are plagued with this preventable illness, and in some cases of people with weak immune systems (children, people suffering from immune diseases, and the elderly) have been killed. A positive look at food borne illness caused by microorganisms would be when food production is stopped, and then changed in a way to prevent that bacteria to contaminate food. Studies are being done on ways to prevent or rid foods of these harmful microorganisms to make produced foods safer to consume. Things such as proper handling of food substances, storage, and even cooking methods and temperatures. Some countries has approved the use of food safe radiation on things that commonly contain bacteria like red meat products, eggs still in shells, and seeds. This safe irradiation technique breaks DNA and protein bonds of bacterial cells to make the food safe from dangerous illness causing micro organisms.

6.    We currently live in a time of convenience, and the most convenient thing about it is access to food. Not only is this convenient food ready to eat withing 5 minutes of ordering it through your car window, but as it turns out is also less expensive then buying those same ingredients from the store and making the same meal yourself. This sounds like an amazing time to live when it's put as simply as that, but in reality it is one of the major causes of the obesity epidemic in America.
This food that is readily available for such a low cost is also extremely low and in some cases even void of any type of positive nutrition. Not only is this low nutrition food high in saturated fats, is usually accompanied by a soft drink of choice, which contains far more sugar than the RDA. This sugar content comes from corn syrup which is one of the cheapest ways to sweeten something due to the massive amount of corn produced in the United States every year. This corn is uninhibited by drought or pest due to current biotechnology which is able to alter this plant's genetic code making it immune to these common crop issues. The more corn, the more corn syrup, the more soda. Not only is this corn being turned into soft drinks and treats alike, but it is fed to cattle in feed lots to fatten them up quickly to be sent to the slaughterhouse so they can be turned into a burger just as quick as that soft drink to join it.
Sugary and fatty foods coupled with the ease of driving to the nearest fast food joint and eating behind the steering wheel is without a doubt a very unhealthy habit. Not even regarding the food, but just the concept of never even needing to walk in order to eat is a slight glimpse into why else Obesity is on the rise. Where is the physical activity in anyone's daily life? Now taking into account the opposite of nutritious food being consumed, that does not have any benefit for the body actually takes up so much of the bodies energy to digest and process that anybody who eats it lacks the physical stamina to get enough exercise to ride their body of the excess calories. This is all a vicious cycle, and the industry causing this issue refuses to change because of the amount of money their companies make off of consumers is more important to them.

Nutrition Perspectives Project

Food Inc. documentary by Robert Kenner shows the effect of massive food corporations power and control over the food industry in America, as well as other countries in the world. Starting in the supermarket and then going backwards, the film follows where mass produced food comes from, and what processes it goes through before it is purchased by a consumer. The film shows the dark side of this corporate industry that they try to hide from consumers due to their unethical treatment of animals, factory workers, and even simple farmers trying to make a living. Not only does this film discuss where food comes from, but Food Inc. also shows where this food is going, and how it is affecting consumers. Whether it be by increasing the price of healthy food options and making unhealthy fast food cheap causing diabetes, or causing outbreaks of Ecoli that have killed children. By diving into these issues, Food Inc. tells the grueling story of each of these facets of the American food system first hand, and ties it all together in the end by urging people to take action by demanding change to be taken place in how things are done in the food and agricultural industry.[1]
I personally chose to watch Food Inc. because it was a film I had been wanting to watch for some time now. I heard from others that it contained graphic images of slaughterhouses so I was holding off watching it for awhile because that is difficult for me to view. I have seen other documentaries that discuss similar issues, and I am fascinated by the topic that is the American food industry and how corrupt it is. I was pleased to find out that Michael Pollan is in this film as well because I love his book The Omnivore's Dilemma which has an entire section in it that talks about the growing and usage of American corn. I was excited to know that Food Inc. discusses that topic as well with some imagery to help explain the topic. I also chose to watch this film because I feel that it is everyone's right to be informed, and that it is also my responsibility as a consumer to have an understanding of where something, as important as food, is coming from and in which way it is being produced. This is something that I feel very strongly about, consumers becoming educated, and then with that new found knowledge, making ethical and educated decisions as to where they spend their money.
The writer and Director of Food Inc. does not have any specific background in Nutrition. He is a screenwriter, and although he is known for writing and directing a few other films, he is best known for his work of Food Inc. he spent quite some time researching and filming for this show, that I think grants him at least some specialty on the subject. Food Inc. was produced in 2008, and I think that the topics discussed in this film continue to be more and more relevant today. The food industry has just kept on growing since that time, and from what we learn in the film, the changes that need to be made takes years in government's hands to make laws that in the end don't get passed. So yes, Food Inc. is very much applicable today because we still haven't seen changes that need to happen.
One of the first topics addressed in the film is Fast Food. The film follows a family of four in their minivan as they pull up to a drive through window to order their meal. Each member of the family gets a hamburger, a fountain drink, and an order of french fries. The mother of the family then shares her dilemma: That it is more cost effective to feed her whole family fast food, and even though she knows that it is unhealthy for them, they are offered a wide variety so everyone is happy with choosing from the menu what they want. The film then follows this same family to the grocery store, the family is in the fresh produce section and the father of the family picks up a head of broccoli and is blown away that one head of broccoli is more expensive than buying a couple of hamburgers from a fast food restaurant.
The film expands this issue by showing how inexpensive processed food is, like candy, soda, and chips in comparison to whole fruits and vegetables just an isle or two over in the same grocery store. The mother of the family and the oldest daughter of the family each talk about the concern for diabetes in their family. The father already has diabetes, and the youngest child is at a very high risk of one day having diabetes at an earlier age because the food they can afford is what is causing this disease.[2] The textbook states that almost every day 40% of youth in America eat food from a fast food restaurant, because it is inexpensive and they are able to buy a lot more food for very little amount of money.[3] The textbook also informs us that the rise in obesity among children is coupled with a rise in children being diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes, which was once only found among adults who were obese and 40 years or older.[4] This information coupled with information about type 2 diabetes in children increases the understanding of the issue regarding the amount of fast food or processed foods being eaten by children beginning at a young age.
Food Inc. has an overarching concern that is being addressed for a large portion of the film, that concern is food borne illness, specifically Ecoli. The film follows a mother who's young child died due to an hamburger that was eaten that was made with meat infected with Ecoli. This mother was working with government officials in Washington DC to create laws that require food safety to be among the highest of priorities to inhibit the spread of these food borne illness related deaths. The film discusses where Ecoli came from, the part of a cows stomach called the rumen. The only reason this portion of the cows stomach acquired Ecoli is because cows are being fed corn and corn only. Corn is not something that cows are able to digest whatsoever, so when the rumen gets a load of corn from the cows meal, it does not have the necessary digestive bacteria to digest it, which creates a space for Ecoli to grow. When cows are taken to be slaughtered, their hair is covered in Ecoli containing feces, and that bacteria transfers from the feces on the fur to the exposed meat in the slaughterhouse.[5] We know from the textbook that food borne illness is found most commonly by foods that are moist and rich as a source of protein. Meat is on the top of that list, it is a common source for Ecoli to breed and colonize due to its perfect living conditions for bacteria.[6]
Corn is really the main star of the show, but not in a good way. So much corn is grown not only to feed the massive feedlots full of cows, but also to be chemically transformed and turned into things like high fructose corn syrup, a product that can be found in almost every processed food sold on the grocery store shelf. How are they able to produce so much corn you ask? Since it is just a plant, and growing things can be very unpredictable from amount of water, to pests destroying and entire crop. Biotechnology is discussed briefly in the textbook as a way to alter an organism, like a corn crop, in a way that is able to withstand the things that make it unsuccessful. [7] Food Inc. addresses this amazing scientific discovery as a major issue. Biotechnology could be great for the world, if its powers were used for good and not evil. As is uncovered in the film, it is only used for evil. All of that corn that is being fed to millions of cows in feedlots is creating more and more growth of Ecoli in those cow's rumens. And all of that corn that is being turned into high fructose corn syrup is used to sweeten those soft drinks that adolescents are drinking multiple times a day and is most likely going to cause them early onset diabetes. If biotechnology was used to help provide everyone nutritious food to make them healthy, and to end world hunger it would be amazing. Sadly, this major accomplishment is creating an extremely negative impact. This is something that confused me, the textbook brushed over this topic so quickly and made it seem that it was being used to do incredible things, when in reality it is doing the opposite.
By doing this assignment, I learned of the importance of consumers. The more educated consumers are, the better food will be purchased, and these statistics are capable of making the food industry change. I learned from Food Inc. that every single item that you purchase is like casting a vote for that item. I want to be casting positive votes, so that positive change can take place. Some of the positive votes that I want to incorporate in my purchases for food are: buying local to support local small family farmers and not massive corporations that exploit and mistreat their workers and their products. I also would like to cast my purchase vote to buy things that are in season, to ensure I am supporting a positive and natural way to produce food, as well as to get the most out of the food that I am eating. If crops are in season, and coming from a local source, I am more likely to get the most vitamins and minerals from that fruit or vegetable than one that has come from 1,500 miles away and has lost most of its nutritional value due to oxidation.

*Reflection*

1.    In another course I took at SLCC, I was required to write a research paper on an issue that interested me. I chose to write about Monsanto, the food and farming corporation that I find very dishonest, greedy, cruel, and damaging to our society environment. I did a lot of research regarding their company practices, and treatment of farmers; but it wasn't until I took this nutrition class that my understanding of it all came full circle for me. Not only was I able to learn truly of the negative health effects of pesticide usage on fresh produce, but I learned about food borne illness caused by microorganisms found in things like red meat. I was able to tie my knowledge of Monsanto's GMO corn to the cattle that was eating it, which in the cattle's ruminant stomach was not able to be digested properly that E coli was able to grow, and be transferred via cow feces into red meat. It was amazing to be able to understand the bigger picture and really see the issue as a whole and not as individual pieces that didn't add up.

2.   Before I took this course, I always understood that having a basic knowledge of nutrition was important. What I learned throughout this course was how much nutrition effected your entire body. I always sort of thought of nutrition as a way to maintain body weight, and I learned that it is so much more than that. I learned that nutrition effects how our body and organs work together, and kept them working properly. That different micronutrients played a role in different chemical and biological components of our bodies. I really learned the most when it came to the chapters on Vitamins and minerals, as well as learning about what can happen if you are deficient in any micronutrients. Moving forward, I will now look at nutrition in a way of how to be sure my body is getting what it needs to be healthy and successful in all of its functions. And to pay special attention to things like my susceptibility to osteoporosis, and what things I need to include in my everyday life to prevent that.

HLAC Wellness Journey Spring 2018

Over the course of this semester, I have set a lot of goals, as well as achieved some regarding my health and wellness. I have also made some lifestyle changes with these goals that I am very happy with.
I initially singed up for the HLAC class to have an excuse to go rock climbing again because I hadn't made time to climb in the last year. Little did I know that by the end of the semester, I would have a new occupation, be eating a totally different way, making more time to build relationship with friends, as well as exercising regularly each week. I think that these changes really came about at the beginning of the semester when we had to do the wellness assessment. It really made me think about my lifestyle and habits.
I was in a job that was so incredibly draining emotionally for me. I was in charge of taking care of someone else's life , and it was leading to me not taking care of me.At the end of the day, all I wanted to do was lay down and not take care of my own life because my efforts for the day were already for someone else's behalf. This was not going very well for me. I was recognizing this unhealthy behavior and mindset, and how much it was affecting my life negatively in my physical health as well as my relationships with my family and friends. I was originally not going to sing up for classes, but made my first step to a healthier life mentally by signing up for this climbing class. This was going to be the first thing that I was taking the time out of my day for my own pleasure in a long while.
I made a goal before the class started to make new friends in this environment, to help create a support group to keep up with this new habit of rock climbing each week. In order to accomplish my goal, I made an effort to get  to know everybody in my class, and have a meaningful conversation with them. This gave me such a boost emotionally! I hadn't made that kind of time to really talk with a new person in a while, and I remembered how fulfilling it is to create new friendships and share moments with other people. In my second class of the semester, I talked more with a girl I had introduced myself to last time, and got talking to her about what she did for work. Turns out, her field of interest was exactly what I was hoping to study! She invited me to come volunteer with the environmental non-profit she worked for, and then in a few weeks, I was being hired on as an intern! I was able to quit my draining job, start working and doing something that I love, as well as make a load of new friends in the process.
During this semester, I really got to thinking of different ways to help myself live a healthier life. I immediately thought about my diet as well as current health issues. I made it my goal to get on top of my health by making an appointment with my doctor and having some guidance as where to start my process of healing or living with this health issue. He helped me come up with a plan, and I was able to quit taking my current digestive medicine that was causing my health problems to be worse. I also made an effort to start eating a vegetarian diet, as well as eating regular meals. These things helped me have more energy, as well as helped me feel less sick so I wanted to exercise more.
Having class once a week helped me begin my new exercise habit. Starting easy by a once a week commitment helped me later on build upon that and now I exercise three times a week. I even got a membership to the climbing gym so I am able to keep this exercise habit up, and keep rock climbing even though my class is over.
All of these components of my new healthier life have helped me feel less stress about life, and have made me feel so much happier. So much has happened this semester, and I am so glad that it all started with my simple decision to start rock climbing again.

Humanities 1100 Reflection Paper #4

HUMA 1100 Reflection Paper #4
Alfred, Lord Tennyson, the poet of The Charge of the Light Brigade, uses his poetry to convey the experiences of the soldiers involved in the charge by utilizing poem structure to give visual aid of war order, word usage to provide imagery of battle, and dactylic syllables to provide sounds of battle. These three tools each provide a way for the reader to understand the experiences of the soldiers in such short but powerful writing.
When looking at the poem initially, the reader sees a few things regarding the structure. Firstly, each stanza is roughly the same length give or take a line or two, and each line within each set of stanzas are roughly the same length. This simple observation aids the reader in visualizing soldiers in a line marching forward into battle. Secondly, the reader notices as they begin to read, that there is pattern that follows. Each line is short and to the point, almost as if they are similar to what it would look like to write down the orders or instructions given by the military leaders. Tennyson even writes a few of his lines to imply quotations coming from these imagined military leaders. He writes, "Forward, the Light Brigade! Charge for the guns!" which are to be interpreted as a call to action given by a leader.
Tennyson's use of imagery aids the reader in imagining for themselves where the soldiers are in battle in regards to enemy lines because he gives a description of their location within each stanza. In the first stanza Tennyson begins by saying "Half a league, half a league, half a league onward," which lets the reader understand that the soldiers are not quite to the enemy lines, but that they are closing in quickly. In the Third Stanza, he gives a description of where the soldiers are in relation to the enemy's cannons as they approach the enemy lines: "Cannon to right of them, Cannon to left of them, Cannon in front of them". Then as they progress deeper into battle, the fifth stanza explains their location in regards to the cannons "Cannon to right of them, Cannon to left of them, Cannon behind them".
Along with the imagery of the soldiers location and progression amongst the enemy line of defense, Tennyson provides descriptive word usage that lets the reader imagine the soldiers grueling point of view during the progression of battle. He begins to describe the battle field as the "valley of death" which is very appropriate when he continues onward with the rest of his descriptive words of war such as: " jaws of Death", "mouth of Hell", "battery-smoke", "Storm'd at with shot and shell", and finally "horse and hero fell". Putting Tennyson's gruesome words together leads the reader to understand the difficult battle for the soldiers.
Dactylic meter is used by Tennyson to provide sound to convey the experience of the soldiers when the reader reads this poem aloud. Dactylic meter is when one stressed syllable is followed by two unstressed syllables, and reading a poem correctly can prove to have more depth to it than just the word meanings. In just two lines of Tennyson's poem ,"Cannon to right of them, Cannon to left of them" we can hear the intended sounds of cannon fire due to the dactylic meter, and one could arguably say the sound of horses hooves pounding the ground as they gallop into battle.

Utilizing these three poetry tools, Tennyson is able to convey the experiences of the soldiers in The Charge of the Light Brigade by providing visualization of military order within the stanza's structure, imagery to give perspective of the soldiers location in battle or their view of the battle, and finally Dactylic meter to provide a soundtrack of war cannons. Tennyson understands that in order to enhance and add depth to his writing, application of poetry tools provide the reader with a deeper connection and understanding of his work.

Math 1030 Signature Assignment

      Math 1030/Quantitative Literacy

Signature Assignment

I chose to upload the Working in the Yard written assignment for my signature assignment. I feel like it gives a pretty good example of some of the essential skills that I learned in my Quantitative Literacy Math 1030 class this semester.
This assignment came from our Problem Solving Module at the beginning of the semester. This module really helped change the way I look at story problems, as well as the rest of any of the math problems that we encountered as the semester continued forward. I started to look at math problems critically, and began to break them down into separate parts to know what I needed to solve or organize first in order to help the problem make sense.
This class really helped me understand the applications of math in real world problems and situations. That's another reason that I chose this assignment to upload; because it's a math problem that is a real life problem. I want to remember this skill so that I can really look at things from all angles when I have a project or a problem in my life. This assignment showed us how analyzing can help you save time, money, as well as be sure things are done accurately. Great life skill.

Here were the original instructions for the Working in the Yard assignment, as well as the information that was given to us for the problem needing to be solved at hand:

Using this information, figure out whether your neighbor will save money by picking up the soil himself.  Use the results of your calculations to guide your decision:  would you recommend that your neighbor pick up the soil himself, or pay for delivery?
Detail all your assumptions and calculations, and clearly write out your final conclusions.
Take a picture, or scan your work and submit it with your written explanation.
  • Is he redoing the whole yard or just the front?
    • He's redoing the whole yard
  • How much topsoil does he need?
    • I'm not sure, you'll have to figure that out.  Remember he's putting a new 4 inch layer down over all the area currently covered by grass in the overhead picture above.
  • How big is the yard?
    • I'm not sure, but you can probably estimate it using the overhead picture.
  • What kind of pickup truck does he drive?
    • A 2003 Ford F-150 XL.
  • How much can the pickup carry?
    • The truck bed is 80 inches long, 69 inches wide, and 20 inches tall.
  • How much is the delivery charge?
    • $30 per truckload on top of the soil cost.  Each truckload can deliver up to 18 cubic yards.
  • How much does the topsoil cost?
    • $18 per cubic yard (sold in 1/4 yard increments).
  • How far is the soil store?
    • It is 9 miles away.  It takes about 20 minutes to drive there.
  • What gas mileage does the pickup truck get?
    • It averages 17 miles to the gallon.
  • What is the current gas cost?
    • Assume it's $3.79/gallon.
Here I have uploaded my assignment sheet. This shows the steps I needed to take in order to do the calculations properly, as well as in which order I needed to do them to make sense of the information:
Here I share my written portion to go along with my calculations to help make sense of my thought process and explain my reasoning:

From my calculations I figured that having the soil delivered to his house from the store would cost around $928.89 dollars including the cost of the soil as well as the cost regarding the amount of truckloads delivered. I then figured that it would cost him around $866.98 if he took care of the truckloads himself with his truck. This cost came from the price of the soil, and how much money in gas he would be paying in total. From these two costs, I would let him know that it would save him around $61.91 which is a good amount of money, but I also calculated how long it would take him to drive back and forth from the store. It would take him around 4.66 hours of driving time. That doesn't include the amount of time he would have to wait to have them fill his truck, and then unload his truck once he got home. If he is looking to save every penny I would suggest that he does the whole job himself. But when it comes down to it, if he is also doing all of the yard work I think that it would be worth it to have the soil delivered. If he did that, as soon as the first load comes he could start spreading it around the yard, and get his work done a lot faster.

Exercise And a Sense of Wellbeing

Hunter Tanner
HLAC
Exercise And a Sense of Wellbeing:

I personally believe that to really have a sense of wellbeing you must feel well physically as well as mentally. These two points go hand in hand, and help create that balance in your life that creates that sense of wellbeing. What isn’t understood by many though is the aspect of mental health and being physically active.
The NHS (National Health System) in the UK have an entire section on their website regarding mental health and exercise. This direct quote helps explain in one way that physical activity aids in relieving symptoms of mental illness:
“Evidence shows that there is a link between being physically active and good mental wellbeing.
Being active doesn’t mean you need to spend hours in the gym, if that doesn't appeal to you. Find physical activities that you enjoy and think about how to fit more of them into your daily life.”
I personally believe that the overall point of this quote is very true regarding the relationship between participating in a physical activity that you enjoy, physical health benefits that come from that exercise, as well as the joy that you will have doing something that enjoy and making time for that in your everyday life.
In my experience, I have found that I will put of exercise and probably not do it if it is honestly something that I do not find fun or enjoyable. Even though I know that it is healthy, and good for me, that is not enough of a motivation to get me to the point that I personally want to participate. For example, going for a run. I do not find that fun, I find it difficult, un-enjoyable, and that I am watching the time and counting down until I can just be done already.
In contrast, I have found that I look for any possible time that I can fit into my day an activity that I truly do enjoy. I love to go hiking, and instead of taking my dog just for a walk around the neighborhood, I look for opportunities to take my dog on a hiking trail. I must make sure that I block out a pretty large amount of time to do so because unlike running, I lose track of time and could easily be up on a trail for a good two hours before I realize that I should probably be finished soon.
Looking at the scientific side of things, this sense of happiness and wellbeing doesn’t just magically come from doing something that you love to do. HelpGuide.org explains what happens inside your brain that creates a better sense of wellbeing when you are physically active, and even combat symptoms of mild to moderate depression. Their website states:
“It [exercise] promotes all kinds of changes in the brain, including neural growth, reduced inflammation, and new activity patterns that promote feelings of calm and well-being. It also releases endorphins, powerful chemicals in your brain that energize your spirits and make you feel good. Finally, exercise can also serve as a distraction, allowing you to find some quiet time to break out of the cycle of negative thoughts that feed depression.”
The chemicals in your brain, and your neuro pathways have a larger impact on your personal sense of wellbeing than most people give credit for. So not only is exercise helping your body literally be healthier by building muscles, burning fat, and creating endurance. It is helping your brain to do similar things in its’ own way. Those endorphins that your brain creates when you are physically active are later craved by your body, and can become a good habit for you to consistently achieve.
I have found personally that I have a clearer sense of thought, a better outlook on life, and more positive thoughts about myself as I have strived to incorporate more physical activity into my life. I have learned from my HLAC class this semester how to have fun and be physically active. There are countless types of physical activity out there in the world, something for everybody. It is nice to have a class where you can set out a time each week to participate in physical activity, and I have found that it helps me with my focus in other secular classes that I am taking this semester as well.

English 2010- Look Back Revision and Reflection

Open Letter

Dear Monsanto Food Corporation,
There is no easy way to say this Monsanto, but I think that you are evil. Pure evil actually. The way that you run your agrochemical, agricultural biotechnology corporation is wrong. I am a consumer of food like every single human being living on the planet, because if you forgot, food is actually something that we need live and stay alive. I'm not sure if you have forgotten this simple fact, you never were taught this concept, or if you really just don't care. The reason I bring this up is that you definitely  do not run your food business in a way that shows that you are grasping the gravity of what you are claiming to have "control" over. Your genetically modified organisms, and your excessive use of pesticides actually do have an incredibly negative side affect that you are willfully ignoring. Come on, there is no way that you are that oblivious.
I'm writing to you in the first place to not only tell you how much I hate your guts, but why I hate your guts, and to explain to you just how wrong you are going about doing things. Someone needs to. You seem to be completely oblivious of your actions and their consequences, and frankly, it's disgusting how little you care.
Here's the lowdown Monsanto; you are messing with things that ethically should not be messed with. Do you remember what I was saying about the human race? The fact that everybody alive needs to eat to live, and that they have the right to do so? Yeah, food is kind of an essential thing to life. The fact that you are taking this food, these seeds and these products and genetically modifying them for your own selfish gain isn't right. You own 282 million acres of farmland in the U.S., which act as you selfish empire of 1,676 seeds and other types of genetically modified organisms, GMO's that you own the patent for (Organic Consumers Association). This monopoly that you are creating has some grim consequences if you continue running your business in the way that you currently are.
Answer this question for me: What's going to happen when all of the original seed, plant, and animal organisms are completely wiped out by your patented and modified seeds and organisms? You have the ability to do your ethical part and make your products affordable to everyone, so that no one goes hungry. My guess is that this won't be the case. You won't be the hero of the day by lowering your prices on these GMO's and the foods that they go into, the only food that will be available in this scenario (Karlin Hauter). No, I know that you are just waiting for that day to come, and as soon as it does, bam, your GMO seeds and food products will skyrocket in price. You will have what people need, but they can only have it if they pay the right price. You need to stop before you take this too far. You have more control than anyone should in regards to such an ethical dilemma.
I want to address for just a moment your complete and utter obsession with Round-Up weed killer. I honestly think that if you could, you would marry that stuff. It's really sad. What's more sad about your obsession is the affects that it has on far more than just your ability to grow more crops without the weeds getting in your way. By genetically modifying your seeds to be resistant  to this pesticide, farmers are able to spray as much Round-Up as they please. They can spray acres and acres of this poison all over their crops and be completely content with doing so. I can't picture exactly what you will be saying out loud right now; "What's wrong with that? Our crops are able to grow more than our competitors because we have solved the weed problem!" This is where I am honestly surprised at how obtuse you are about any type of issue that you cause. I can think of three major problems that this excess Round-Up causes. How can you not see these?
Over spray of crops does go elsewhere Monsanto. It doesn't just stop at the crops while they are in the fields. Take a second to think about how much of that poisonous residue is coated on your agricultural products that leave the fields, and are now being sold in grocery stores to be purchased and then eaten. Now think about what happens to the excess spray that either drips off of the crops, or is sprayed directly onto the soil. That poison sinks down through the soil and is then carried away by the water in the ground, and the irrigation systems that are set up around these farming fields.
You are literally putting poison into the water system like a traditional super villain from a comic book. Want some proof? Our good friends from the USGS (U.S. Geological Survey) took some samples from a few different water ways in a 38 states and found Glyphosate, Round-Up's main chemical ingredient in all samples of water. 70% of rain samples they took during their study contained this chemical as well. Those aren't small numbers, how can you not acknowledge that?
I guess that there is only one backlash of your evil doings that has the potential to upset you at least a little bit. You know those weeds you are working oh so hard to keep from your selfishly used crop yields? Yeah, here's the thing... they are beginning to gain a resistance to the pesticides used to kill them. Pretty soon, your loved Round-Up probably won't even work and you are going to be faced with a problem that you finally won't be able to ignore.
Not only are you causing the extinction of organisms, but you are also causing all consumers to suffer from the wrath of your love affair with Round-up.
            Monsanto, you're a jerk.

           Sincerely,
           Disgusted

 Reflection

I feel like I have learned a lot more this semester in English 2010 then I have in my past English classes, and they definitely have helped me improve as a writer. I'm not just saying this because this is an assignment and I'm trying to write exactly what my professor is looking for. I honestly and truly learned a lot of valuable skills this semester through my writing assignments. Some bigger things like how to correctly format and write a works cited page and how important good in depth research and sources are to being able to write an effective persuasive piece. Some smaller things, like the importance of creating a proper rough draft to work from and make revisions to, as well as taking the time given to write assignments to actually write and not wait until the last minute.
The works cited activities and lessons we had in class helped immensely in my understanding of how to make sure you are citing things correctly and not just trusting an online citation generator to do a perfect job. I was surprised at how much was left out when I would rely on the online generator to do the whole thing for me. It was also helpful to not only learn the correct formatting, but to also learn why you arrange things in certain orders for different types of citations like MLA and APA.
From the very first assignment to the very last assignment, I feel like I gained a greater understanding of the importance of finding good reliable sources for research. My first assignment, I feel like I ran out of things to talk about, as well as that my information really didn't come together very well as a whole. As I did each project, I found out how to weed out different sources and really stick to ones that I could work with and that really had information that pertained to my subject. For my "look back affect" project I decided to revise my very first assignment, the open letter, so I could rewrite it with the knowledge that I have now regarding sources and reliable useful information. It made it a lot easier to revise, and I even ended up taking out a whole paragraph and replacing it with new information from sources that I found when doing my information project.
Doing this look back project gave me the opportunity to learn for myself just how important creating a proper rough draft to revise and analyze is. Throughout the semester, my rough drafts were quite rough looking, and resembled more of a bulleted list or outline of what my plan would be. It took a lot more effort to work from that than to just type up a rough draft to fix, but I didn't really understand until I revised my open letter for this look back project. I took the time to work from a hard copy of my original assignment, and made markings with pen areas that needed to be clarified, and even wrote out an entire new paragraph to replace the one that didn't fit well with the original. It also made a huge difference working on the revisions in my spare time at work, and not waiting until the last day to get it all figured out. It not only helped my assignment turn out nicely, but I also didn't have the stress that I usually have when I have to work with a very minimal amount of time to do a lot of work.
I would have to say that my biggest accomplishment during this class was that I wasn't afraid to get feedback from people and put it towards my work without being offended or scared. I have always hated peer reviews. Always. I didn't look at them with the right mindset, and I took it as a personal attack on my work instead of as constructive feedback like I should have. I made it a goal at the beginning of the semester to really try to change my attitude about the whole feedback thing. At first it was super hard. I was really proud of my first draft of my open letter until I read it out loud and didn't feel like I got any positive feedback whatsoever. I thought to myself that this goal of mine was going to be a lot more difficult than just making up my mind to feel differently about feedback in general.
I made a plan to give feedback in a way that I would want to get feedback myself if it was intended to be given constructively. So during peer reviews I really focused on the giving aspect. I then took that feedback from the open letter and really tried to utilize on my information project which came next. I didn't have the right perspective on the whole thing. Instead of trying to just improve a little bit, I almost felt like I was working to make the next assignment cover all of the areas that I was told I was lacking in the first project, and that I was trying to prove people wrong. That wasn't the best approach, and I learned that afterwards. I finally figured out by the third project that it was about taking this feedback and just trying to do your best, and that it was a learning process, not something that happens overnight, or even on the very next assignment.
Working on the look back project gave me the chance to really apply all of these things, and finally use the very first peer feedback in a positive way on my revision. I came out a lot more patient with my work, as well as gained a better perspective on taking my time to write a higher quality paper instead of just bashing it out last minute.
